Beginning in the spring of 1939, more than 450 destroyer escorts were built by the United States. They were primarily used to support the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. During that time, they escorted Merchant Marine ships, provided protection from aircraft attacks and were used in anti-submarine warfare. Because of the risk of fires and explosions, destroyer escorts were often built with asbestos. Typically, destroyer escorts carried a crew between 150 – 200 servicemen, meaning thousands of people were at risk of asbestos exposure during their service.
